How To Choose The Best Makeup For Acne Prone Skin

Using makeup for acne is an obvious way to cover up unsightly skin, and common sense and a little research will ensure that your beautification efforts enhance your natural skin tone and facial features. These key points will help you avoid common mistakes and reach the best decision when it comes to using cosmetics to conceal blemishes.

Get Accurate Information

When you ask acne sufferers what the best makeup is, you’ll find that there are many conflicting answers. There is an old myth that cosmetics make acne worse, but that is no longer a concern with the modern era of nonacnegenic and noncomedogenic makeup.

Other people say that using foundation worsens acne, but this is also untrue. In fact, foundation can protect skin from the harsh elements your face is exposed to everyday, though a lighter foundation that is oil free is better suited to acne sufferers than a heavy one. No matter what makeup you choose, be sure to thoroughly wash your face each evening. Dermatologists can provide sound guidance about beneficial products and which ones to avoid, helping to improve your health as well as your look.

Use Makeup Effectively

A tinted moisturizer can be a great starting point for acne cover-up makeup, as moisturizers help prevent a heavy, artificial look in facial areas that are not affected by acne. It’s also best practice to use a liquid concealer to deal with larger outbreaks by specifically targeting the affected areas, and then use powder on a concealer brush to smooth out blemishes. Setting your concealer with loose powder is also a good way to reduce the potential for smearing.

Things To Avoid

Common mistakes made by acne sufferers include applying too much makeup or using the wrong type. In both cases, the skin ends up looking worse. The question of what makeup to use and what should be avoided depends on what else you are using to treat your acne. If you are not using any medication, then makeup that contains Salicylic Acid can help heal you skin. However, you should avoid cosmetics with Salicylic Acid if you are using another acne medication.

Also be aware that it best not to use lip gloss, as it often ends up on your face where it can prove an irritant to acne. You will want to be careful to avoid anything that will clog your pores, and powder cosmetics are a good way to minimize that risk. Once applied, you can even use a facial powder to then set your liquid foundation. Additionally, you want to be sure that anything you put on your face, including soap, is gentle and nurturing for skin made sensitive by acne.

Finally, remember that whatever makeup you use to conceal acne should be safe, easy to remove, and supportive of healthy skin. There are plenty of good options available at the store or online. Everyone can find good makeup to use with acne, and taking the time to be safe, smart, and sensible about what cosmetics you use will ensure blemish free and healthy skin.
