Stress is a catch-all term that refers to a state of being agitated. This can be either mentally or physically. Biological stress has a very different definition from mental or emotional stress. Typically, stress will generally refer to an organisms response to a stressor. A stressor can be some sort of environmental condition or stimulus that is different from the stimuli that the organism is used to.
Biological stress is the body’s way of meeting a changing environmental stimulus. It can be thought of as a response to something that is happening to it. Usually stress is taken in colloquial language to be something negative but, in reality, it is neither negative nor positive. It is simply something that the body does. The fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system is a good example of a stress response.
Mental or emotional stress can be attributed to a huge number of things. Mental stress can play just as large a role in the health of a person as physiological stress. This is because, like it or not, the brain plays a huge role in the regulation of the body. When the brain is taxed through mental effort, it can have wide ranging effects on the body as a whole.
Does Stress Cause Acne?
Stress and acne do have a relationship with each other. Stress can act to aggravate existing acne symptoms. The issue is that there is literally no way to avoid it. The response that the body has can be modified in such a way that it does not have as many of the negative effects associated with it, but stress is not something that can be gotten rid of entirely, contrary to popular belief.
There are a few ways that stress can exacerbate an acne problem. Acne sufferers often have clogged pores that are not visible to the human eye. When stressed, the body creates an inflammation response which can cause the walls of those pores to break and spill their contents into the surrounding skin. This, in turn, leads to an immune response which reddens the area and attracts leukocytes (white blood cells) to the area, creating the pus that is so often prevalent in acne legions. In addition: During times of stress the adrenal glands begin working overtime and begin producing androgen which increase the size of your oil gland. This will lead to more acne.
There are a couple goods ways to handle this problem. First and foremost: exercise. Light to moderate exercise a few times a week will help your body recover and function in the way that it was meant to function. A healthier body will lead to less stress which will ultimately lead to less acne.
Meditation is another method to try. This can be as simple as sitting still and trying to clear your mind for a few minutes each day. Try and focus on breathing. Breath is an important aspect of almost every kind of meditation. Stilling the mind through meditation can help to alleviate mental stress that accumulates throughout the day. Finally: A good sleep pattern is essential for avoiding stress.
