Sun Exposure and Acne

Every since I was little, I was always told to use sunscreen every day. I was told that that sun was bad. Without sunscreen, I could get sunburned which could potentially lead to skin cancer. This was all important advice and I have used sunscreen religiously since I was young. But after I started doing research to clear my acne, I realize that the sun might not be that bad for you after all.

So is it good to stay out in the sun without protection? This is a good question and it’s one that I get asked a lot. The answer is that it depends. But overall, yes, the sun is good for acne when you expose yourself to the sun for short periods of time. The best way to do this is to take short 10-25 minute sunbaths a couple times a week. You might even be able to take them daily if your skin will permit you. You will have to try out different intervals and durations to see what works best for you and your skin.

A Natural Source of Vitamin D

Sun and Vitamin D

One of the biggest benefits of natural sunlight is that your skin will naturally produce Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential to your everyday health and well-being. Of course you can take a supplement but it just won’t be as effective. The best Vitamin D comes from the sun. Nature is giving you a ‘freebie’. Therefore it’s best to take advantage of this free, high quality supplement.

Psychological Benefits

There is also a psychological component to sunlight. Your body does need natural sunlight for it to function at its best. There’s a reason why a lot of people get seasonally depressed. They are happier in the summer months and start feeling down at the start of winter. The way you feel emotionally does impact your health and your acne condition. Enjoyment plays a role too. For most people, being outside and being at the beach is enjoyable and this will increase your mood. So if you improve your mood and mental state, then your acne condition will also be forced to improve.

It’s important to note that using  sunscreen is still  important. If you are going to be out in the sun for over 25 minutes then it’s wise to use a natural sunblock. You wouldn’t want to get sunburned. Read my article on sunscreen to find the best brand for you.
